The NZCEL qualifications have been designed to provide a national qualification for domestic and international learners of English as an additional language, which allows the community, employers and educational institutions to recognise the level at which the graduate can use English for general or academic purposes.

 

1. Levels of New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL) (60 Credits)   

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) - CEFR high A1 - low A2

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2) - CEFR high A2 - low B1

  • Students have confidence to communicate in basic, familiar, everyday situations in order to participate in an English language environment.

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Applied) (Level 3) - CEFR B1

  • Nationally recognised New Zealand qualification: NZCEL Academic Level 3.

  • Listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, writing skills, vocabulary, grammar development.

  • Students have confidence to communicate in most situations with some independence and fluency in order to participate in academic contexts.

  • Direct entry to some certificate programmes (Level 3 tertiary study) on academic strand.

  • Equivalent to IELTS range 5.0 to 5.5.

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) - CEFR B2

  • Listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, writing skills, vocabulary, grammar development.

  • Students have confidence to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic English language contexts.

  • Direct entry to some Certificate and Diploma programmes (Level 4 and 5 tertiary study) on academic strand. Please check with your education provider for their entry policy for the programme you intend to study.

  • Equivalent to IELTS range 5.5 to 6.5.

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5) - CEFR C1

  • Nationally recognised New Zealand qualification: NZCEL Academic level 5.

  • Listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, writing skills, vocabulary, grammar development.

  • Students have confidence to communicate independently and effectively in a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar situations with fluency and flexibility in professional and/or academic English language contexts.

  • Direct entry to some Diploma, Degree, Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours Degree, Master’s Degree, and Doctoral Degree programmes (Level 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 tertiary study) on academic strand. Please check with your education provider for their entry policy for the programme you intend to study.

  • Equivalent to IELTS range 6.5 to 7.5.

Entry requirements
Entry to NSLS’s Certificate in English Language programme is open to domestic and international students who meet the following entry criteria:

 

- Students must be a minimum of 15 years of age. The programmes are designed to be suitable for both students in senior High School, and for adults 18 years and over.

 

- Students must possess the appropriate visa and evidence of medical and travel insurance (international students).

 

The NSLS Offer of Placement is conditional subject to the student taking a placement test and interview prior to the commencement of the course. NSLS reserves the right to place the student in courses that are appropriate, based on the results of these assessments.
