What is IELTS?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System.

IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. It tests the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is a secure, valid and reliable test of real-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.

Candidates can sit an IELTS test in over 800 centres and locations around the world. This global test has the highest levels of quality control.

Who owns IELTS?

IELTS is jointly managed by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) and delivered through more than 800 test centres and locations in over 130 countries.

British Council connects people worldwide with the learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries. British Council is the UK's international organisation for educational opportunity and cultural relations and is represented in 109 countries worldwide.

IDP: IELTS Australia is one of the world's leading international education and development organisations offering international student placement, English language training and testing services, and the management of international aid projects on behalf of government sponsors. IDP Education was established in 1969 by Australian universities and has placed more international students into Australian educational institutions than any other organisation.

IDP Education, through its subsidiary IELTS Australia, manages a network of IELTS test centres in more than 30 countries.

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) is the world's leading provider of exams for learners of English. Each year the exams are taken by around 1.4 million people, in 135 countries.

Why take IELTS?

Taking an IELTS test will help to open doors to international education and employment all over the globe. Moreover, candidates with high scores are particularly sought after by universities and employers in English-speaking countries.

IELTS tests are guaranteed to show your true ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking, in a way that is relevant to the real world.

Over 6,000 institutions, including 2,000 US universities recognise IELTS .The list of US universities includes all Ivy League Colleges.

IELTS is used as proof of your language ability for immigration purposes.

The UK Border Agency has announced that skilled workers can use IELTS results for the new UK points-based immigration system.
The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, New Zealand Immigration Service and Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools and National Council of State Boards of Nursing USA already recognise or require applicants to hold an IELTS test.

IELTS PRE-TESTING

Cambridge ESOL have approved North Shore Language School, as IELTS pretesting centre.

1. What are pretests?
Testing materials before they are used in exams allows us to make certain our exams are accurate and fair. As part of Cambridge ESOL's commitment to quality and fairness, we submit all the materials in our exams to
a number of procedures to ensure they are accurate and reliable. One of these quality procedures is pretesting.

2. How can they help teachers and learners?
Pretests give learners a chance to practise taking a Cambridge ESOL exam using genuine questions under exam conditions.
After taking the Reading, Listening and Use of English papers, the pretesting candidates are given scores. Writing papers are marked by trained Cambridge ESOL examiners and candidates receive detailed feedback about how they performed in the writing test.
This helps learners to know which areas they need most practice in, and gives them experience and confidence in taking tests.
For teachers, it helps highlight areas where their learners might need more help.

3. What else should I know?
- All test papers and DHL costs are paid by Cambridge ESOL.
- Pretest papers are marked in Cambridge, and scores are returned to schools within three weeks. (Writing papers are sent to examiners for comments on individual candidates, so these scores and reports may take up to four weeks.)
- Pretest administration simulates the real exam, so that students not only experience the kind of questions they will face in their live exam, but also complete the answer sheets in a 'test-like' environment.
We ask your help in ensuring that as far as possible students take the pretests under exam conditions.
- Students are asked to take a short anchor test (15-20 minutes) with each pretest administration to help us
determine the difficulty of the pretest.
- After the pretest, all materials must be sent back to Cambridge ESOL. Materials are strictly confidential and cannot be kept for classroom practice.
- Numbers of pretests available are limited, particularly for writing, and while we will try to supply the number of papers you request we cannot guarantee this. To ensure the fairness of the sample, we also restrict the proportion of students for each pretest from each first language.
- Please note that pretests are not available for YLE or for Speaking papers.

4. How can I find out more?
You can find more information about the purpose and practice of pretesting from the website at www.CambridgeESOL.org Live centres and approved pretest institutions can request pretests online.
For more information on 'pretesting windows' as well as information about the length of pretests, see the Pretesting Calendar.
If you have any further questions about participation in Cambridge ESOL pretesting, please contact us:
